ABRE, the Brazilian Cultural Society of Edmonton, is a volunteer-run non-profit society registered in Alberta. By using abreyeg.ca, creating an account, volunteering, listing a business or using a comanda card at one of our events, you agree to these terms. Please read them together with our privacy policy.
Information on this site
The newcomer guides, consul information and other content are written by community volunteers to share what worked for them. They are general information, not legal, immigration, tax, medical or financial advice. Always confirm details with official sources such as the Government of Canada, the Government of Alberta or the Consulate of Brazil.
Event dates, venues and programs can change. We do our best to keep the site current but cannot guarantee that every detail is accurate at all times.
Accounts
You must be at least 18 years old to create an account. Keep your information accurate and your password private. You are responsible for everything done with your account, and you must tell us if you think someone else has used it. One person, one account.
We may suspend or delete an account that breaks these terms, is used to harm others, or has been inactive for a long time. You can ask us to delete your account at any time through the contact page.
Community portal and business catalogue
Content you post in the portal, including business listings, descriptions and photos, must be yours or used with permission, must be accurate, and must not be unlawful, misleading or offensive. By posting it you give ABRE a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to show it on the site and in ABRE's communications for as long as it stays published.
Admins review listings before they appear and may edit, refuse or remove any listing. A listing in the catalogue is not an endorsement by ABRE. Any purchase or agreement with a listed business is between you and that business.
Volunteering
Applying to volunteer does not guarantee a role, and some roles require a police check or other screening. When you sign up for a shift you are making a commitment to the team; if you cannot make it, cancel in the portal as early as you can. Follow the instructions of coordinators and the safety rules of each venue.
Volunteers are not employees or contractors of ABRE and are not paid for their time.
Comanda (event tabs)
At some events ABRE uses reusable QR cards (comanda) to track what you buy. The card remains ABRE's property; please keep it safe during the event and return it if asked. Whoever holds the card can use it, so treat it like cash.
- Prepaid events: credit you load on a card is valid only during that event. Credit that is left over at the end of the event is forfeited and is not refunded, except where the law requires otherwise.
- Open-tab events: everything added to your tab must be paid in full before you leave the event. ABRE may pursue payment of a tab that is left unpaid.
- Prices are in Canadian dollars and are shown at the event. You can check your tab at any time by scanning your card. Tell a volunteer during the event if something on your tab looks wrong; corrections are made by reversing the item, and disputes raised after the event may not be resolvable.
- Online card payments are processed by Stripe under Stripe's own terms. Cash and card-terminal payments are recorded by ABRE volunteers.
Acceptable use
Do not use the site to post or send anything unlawful, abusive, discriminatory or harassing; to impersonate someone else; to access another person's account or data; to scrape the site; or to interfere with how it works. We may remove content and suspend accounts that break these rules.
ABRE's name, logo and content
The ABRE name, logo, texts, photos and design of this site belong to ABRE or are used under licence. You may share links and use the content for personal, non-commercial purposes. Please ask us before reusing it elsewhere.
Third-party services and links
Sign in with Google, Stripe Checkout, the consul's appointment calendar and links to other websites are provided by third parties under their own terms and privacy policies. ABRE is not responsible for their content or practices.
Liability
The site and its services are provided as they are, by volunteers, free of charge. To the extent permitted by the laws of Alberta, ABRE, its board members and its volunteers are not liable for indirect or consequential losses arising from your use of the site, the portal, a business listing or the comanda. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law.
Changes and governing law
We may update these terms from time to time. The new version will be published here with the date at the top, and continuing to use the site after that means you accept it. These terms are governed by the laws of Alberta and the federal laws of Canada that apply there.
